CHICHESTER
The county town of Chichester is four miles to the west of Halnaker. Chichester has a quadrant layout, inherited from the Romans, with a medieval Market Cross in the centre facing North, South, East and West. The pedestrianised city centre is enclosed within ancient city walls and although the walls are not continuous you can walk on them round the city. The best parts being through Priory Park and the Bishops Palace Gardens.
Chichester offers a good selection of shops, restaurants and pubs on all four streets. At the end of North Street is the celebrated Chichester Festival Theatre with its international reputation for showing brilliant theatrical productions of musicals, comedies and classic drama and its more intimate studio theatre, The Minerva, offering experimental performances and new plays. Located between East Street and North Street is New Park Cinema, an art house cinema showing world films, including award-winning international films. It has a licensed bar staffed by volunteers. On West Street is the prestigious 12th century Chichester Cathedral with its Cloisters Café and Bishop’s Palace Gardens. Off West Street is the Novium Museum with remains of Roman Baths. Off East Street is Pallant House Gallery, known as the home of Modern Art in the South. Located to the south is Chichester Gate Leisure Park with a 10-screen Cineworld cinema, a 16-lane bowling Lakeside Superbowl, and several bars and restaurants including Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Domino's Pizza, Frankie & Benny's, Nando's etc.. At the end of South Street we have the railway and bus stations. You can travel from Chichester by rail to London Victoria (in about an hour and a half); to the historic naval city of Portsmouth (in about 30mins); and to Brighton (in about 40 minutes). By car on the A27, you can easily get to Portsmouth, Southampton and Brighton. (Buses from Halnaker to Chichester go every half hour taking 20mins).
